SBG Texas Leading The Way In New SBG Territory
This sends a strong message to anyone who believes that you need a competition oriented gym to perform well at a competition because we are not one of them.
We help our students prepare for their tournament but that is not all we do. We believe in all rounded education and training for our students, using jiu jitsu to help them become a successful individual and help them thrive in life.
We saw some people leave after they saw their kids not performing well at their first competition believing that changing the gym will magically change their performance.
There is no short cut in life. Period.
Do not give up just because you did not meet your expectations at your first jiu jitsu competition.
All our kids won on fundamentals, good base and posture, solid technique, but most importantly, the right mindset.
All our students were extremely coachable, respected coaches’ advice at every moment, and maintained a positive, calm attitude the whole time, which stood out compared to other competitors.
I believe that if we teach our children to be a good learner, they can learn anything. If we teach them to survive and thrive in our environment, they can survive and thrive anywhere.
I cannot express how proud I am of every student and how grateful I am of all our parents for their trust, support and loyalty.
We truly thank you all. And we truly love you all.
We came this far in only two years. Can’t wait to see how far we will go many years to come!

Coach Matt In Edmonton Canada
“Another great day at the office. We worked a bit of standing, and spent the rest of the time on back escapes.
It was also an honor to be on the mat as coach Steve awarded some well-earned belts. I’ll let him announce that. SBG Canada continues to grow.
Trust Jiu-Jitsu. “
“Me
My Coach Matt Thornton
And one of the best training partners I could ask for Jessie Atwell..
Today was as usual about fundamental movement. However was one of this days that was not only confirming in the process and specific escapes and postures and attacks that I personally have been using for years. It also shows the experience of one of the most amazing coaches I have ever had the Opportunity to learn from. Not only the presentation of the material but the details. I took a choke escape from being 40% effective at least 75% just with one simple change in what I was doing..
I have always found Jiujitsu magical but as I get older and my attributes fade. It becomes so much more amazing with the smallest change in understanding.
Today was a good day. Congratulations to all those that received well deserved promotions You all are well deserving…” – Bill Campbell
Edmonton’s Promotions!
“Congrats to SBG Edmonton’s newest brown belts!! All three are very technical and very different grapplers. All three are focussed on shoring up their deficits and have a vested interest in growth over winning. It is an honour to share the mats with Jeremy, Atown and Han. Thank you for your loyalty and tenacity.
Congrats to coach Brad Kelly @bradkelly6 @sbgdraytonvalley on leveling up and earning his purple belt. I’m hoping to get a picture tomorrow. SBG. #sbgyeg #otov”
“Thank you Steve and Katy for being great hosts, as always. You’re building up a healthy community that’s always a pleasure to visit, and doing an enormous amount of good in the process.
And thank you to all our Canadian tribe members. I’ll see those of you from our east coast family next weekend. ” – Matt Thornton
“It was another great weekend of learning. Where jiujitsu used to be the main focus for me in these amazing seminars with my friend and coach @aliveness_ape. It has become the catalyst for so much more!
The art of jiujitsu has given me a purpose, a growing tribe and an ever evolving relationship with my mentor. It would be short sighted to think that there isn’t always more to learn, always room to grow and infinite opportunities to give back. As years tick by it really is the relationships and memories that yield the sweetest fruit.
Everything is a work in progress from being a head coach, gym owner, father and husband. I fail often and most times more than I’d like. But always walking away a little wiser.
Coach Matt encourages his students to “Focus less on how we are doing and give more focus to what we are doing.” Yet another concept that grows in its effectiveness as I apply it in my life beyond the mats.
From Personal milestones, relationships, parenting, to goal setting this basic principle has given me the ability to be at least a little more forgiving of myself, more patient with my process and more disciplined in my pursuits and cultivation of essential skills. All of which translate to being a better coach, father and and human being.
I’m looking forward to spending next weekend with tribe in the east as Matt will no doubt leave their gyms a better place as he did here this past weekend. Thanks coach! Thank you to everyone who help make weekends like these possible.” – Steve Winjet
